NIT Rourkela- National Institute of Technology was established in 1961. The former prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of this higher educational institute. In 2002, it was granted the status of an autonomous institute. In 2007, the National Institutes of Technology Act declared it as an institute of national importance.
The institute has established the departments of chemical engineering, civil engineering biotechnology and medical engineering, computer science and engineering, civil engineering, ceramic engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, extra academic activity, food process engineering, electronics and communication engineering, earth and atmosphere sciences, humanities and social sciences, industrial design, mathematics, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, metallurgical & materials engineering, life science, planning and architecture, physics and astronomy, and central workshop.
It also has a school of management. It offers BTech, MTech, MSc, MBA and doctoral programmes. This college also provides executive PhD, part-time MBA, and part-time MTech programmes. The fee structure usually varies according to the courses offered.
